2bed/2bath apartment in Girona, Catalonia

When

June 2008, One week

Location

The Rose Condo is located on the top floor of a small apartment building in the heart of Girona's old town, very close to the river. We loved the area. Very lively, with lots of restaurants and shops, but not a lot of noise at night. There is no dedicated parking spot, but we never had trouble finding parking near the apartment.

Nearby Amenities

There are small grocery stores within a hundred meters or so, and larger ones within half a mile. Countless restaurants, bakeries and artisanal helado stands within easy walking distance.

The House/Apartment

The building is old but has been modernized and is in fine shape. There is a lift that functions perfectly. The building itself if very quiet, but it is quite close to the elevated RENFE train tracks. The train noise did not bother us in the least; to the contrary, our two boys derived endless pleasure in trying to figure out what types of trains were passing by and where they might be headed. The only other noise "issue" was from the myriad of church bells, which of course is to be expected when one stays in the old section of any European city.

Garden

There is a small balcony overlooking the river but no usable area outside the apartment itself.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in good shape and comfortable. The apartment was very clean and there was plenty of seating for all.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The double bed in the main bedroom upstairs was quite comfortable and the bedroom small but cozy and had drawers for our clothes. The smaller downstairs bedroom (with single bed) was also very nice, but we really didn't use it much. Our two boys (6 and 8 years old) opted to share the futon in the loft above the living room. The main bathroom upstairs is modern and spacious and met all our needs; there is also a smaller one downstairs that was more than adequate.

Kitchen

The kitchen was small but well-appointed. It was fine for preparing simple meals in the evening. Plenty of dishes and glasses that were of good quality (IKEA, as I recall). We particularly appreciated the fully operational dishwasher.

Problems or Bonuses

Only good ones. The apartment and the location were even nicer than we expected. And we loved Girona and the surrounding area.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked the apartment through homeaway.com, which is similar to VRBO. All of our contact was directly with the owner, Jack, who was pleasant, helpful, and extremely responsive. He has lived in Girona for many years and is a good source of local information.

The apartment was reasonably priced (under priced, really): we paid €500 for the week. There was no cleaning fee or security deposit required.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would absolutely stay here again. During our 14-week trip to Europe this summer, we stayed in 10 different vacation rentals. This was definitely one of the best, and Girona was one of our favorite locales.

Things to do in this area

The city of Girona is delightful--small enough to explore easily on foot, lots of historical sights, charming neighborhoods, and great restaurants and shops. But the best thing about it is its proximity to the wonderful towns on the Costa Brava. We particularly enjoyed Cadaques, L'Escala, Calella Palafrugel, and (across the French border) Collioure. And Port Bou, just below the French border, makes a delightful day trip on the train, if you don't feel like driving.

With regard to restaurants, there is an embarassment of riches. We particularly like the Basque restaurant down the street and the Irish pub around the corner from it, which was very friendly and had excellent food as well. (Sorry, I can't remember their names.)

Using Girona as a base

Girona is one of the best places to base yourself to explore the area. Why? Here goes:
Barcelona is an hour away by car and train-avoid the crime and noise of a big city.
Montserrat and Sitges are 2 hours away.
The French border (Perpignan, Ceret, Colliure) is an hour away.
The Costa Brava with spectacular beaches and scenery is half an hour.
Figueres for Dali's museum is 20 mins by car or train, his house at Portlligat and Castle at Pubol too.
The Greek/Roman ruins of Empuries near L'Escala are half an hour.
The medieval towns of Besalu, Peretallada, Pals and Madremanya are all close.
Some of the best restaurants in the world are on the doorstep:El Bulli,Can Roca, Sant Pol etc
The Romanesque churches/monasteries in the mountain villages of Beget, Camprodon and Ripoll
The natural parks of Montseny, Aiguamolls, Volcanoes and Cap de Creus are all worth exploring.
There are wineries and olive oil presses to visit.
See the fishing boats come into the ports of Palamos, Port de la Selva, Escala and Llanca.
Walk along the Cami de Ronda coastal path from Blanes to the French border.
The charming fishing villages of Llafranc and Cadaques have attracted painters like Dali and Picasso
Cycling- follow Lance Armstrong and other pros that base themselves here for the weather and varied terrain.
That should do for now but see http://discovergirona.net for many more options and ideas

Things to do around Rose Condo Girona

Well, where to start? How about breakfast? There are 2 bakeries within 50m and both have fresh croissants and bread from 7am but no coffee to take away (a frequent complaint, sorry!) If you feel too lazy to go back to the apartment then walk another 20m and sit outside under the chestnut trees at the Konig restaurant where you can eat and drink all day (and part of the night) long.

Want to shop for a nice meal at home, there is an excellent butchers, a small supermarket with fresh fruit and vegetables on display outside and for dessert a selection of ice cream or chocolates to tempt everyone.
Want some culture? OK follow me! On the other side of the street from the Konig restaurant is the Cull de Lleona, a stone pole with a lion climbing up it where you have to climb the 2 steps and kiss the lion's posterior which will not only bring you luck but will also bring you back to Girona again. After this you need to pray/visit the Cathedral which is best approached from the steps below (a reward for anyone who can tell me how many steps there are). You are now in the heart of the Old Town and it's fun to just wander through the narrow streets not knowing what and where you are. More than likely you will come out in the Jewish Call (ghetto) area with the restored synagogue and very interesting museum welcoming you to learn about their 500 years of history here in Girona.
By this time you will be tired so head for the Rambla and sit outside in one of the cafes along this pedestrian area and watch the daily life of the town flow past you. With some 300 days of sunshine chances are you will be outside as even in winter the sun makes the days warm.
Feel like some shopping? Well you are in the right place as there are fashionable boutiques on the Rambla itself and on the opposite side of the river, Santa Clara too, connected by several old pedestrian bridges.
Sounds like it is now time for a bit of exercise so the walkers can head along the Sant Daniel valley and up to the old castle of Sant Miquel which is about an hours walk uphill and the views all the way to the coast and up to the Pyrenees are well worth it. For cyclists the bike path leaves from the Devesa park just next to the apartment and is an old railway line now converted to gravel path that stretches all the way to Olot, 58km away through some spectacular scenery and country villages.
In the evening it's time to explore the vast choice of bars and restaurants from tapas to Michelin starred offerings to suit all palates and wallets. To finish off the day a gentle walk along the streets and squares and finding a terrace to enjoy a coffee or brandy and looking back over a day well spent and planning tomorrow's equally fun options. For the hyper-active a jazz concert or something classic in one of the churches or the Auditori concert hall is available all year long.
Girona-you will fall in love with the lifestyle so beware, you have been warned!

Fully equipped with all amenities including wi-fi and with a lift this restored warehouse has plenty of charm and the location is ideal for all the museums, CathedralJewish quarter and bars and restaurants which are literally on the doorstep.
A 10 min walk to the train/bus station makes it easy to visit Figueres for the Dali musuem or a day trip to Barcelona which is only an hour and a half away.
